A Study of Utilizing IPA in Urban Geriatric Hospital Choice Factor

Abstract

|
The present study aims to derive strategic management factors for urban geriatric hospitals exposed to excessive competition to attract patients. As for the analysis method, this study performed an IP (Importance-Performance) analysis using the importance and performance of choice factors considered by patients towards urban geriatric hospitals, and verified the differences between the importance and performance of each choice factor to identify integral management factors. According to the IP analysis, doctors’ kindness, administration staff’s kindness, doctors’ competence, reliability of medical practice, acceptance of patients’ opinions, proper staffing, maintenance of safety facilities and doctors’ career in geriatric medicine were found as the factors that should be given priority for improvement. By contrast, doctors’ scrupulous consultation and treatment, nurses’ kindness, caregivers’ kindness, physiotherapists’ kindness, overall sanitation of hospitals and choice of nourishing food were found as strengths. Also, it was found that convenience of movement structure, up-to-date medical equipment, convenient facilities, systematic rehabilitation and consultation programs in hospitals, streamlined administrative procedures, low expenses, ratings from reputable agencies, reputation of hospitals and ties with partner hospitals were not considered important. The factors of unnecessarily high performance included convenient transportation and parking facilities, diverse rehabilitation facilities, short queues for admission and convenient night-time medical treatment. Thus, allocation of resources to these factors need be reconsidered. In addition, the analysis of the difference between importance and performance suggests that the qualitative improvement in terms of personal services including the kindness of nurses and caregivers is more important than the convenience of facilities.
